Dear Prof. Tang:

Professors Donald Knuth and I would like to invite you to visit
the Computer Science Department of Stanford University as a Visiting
Scholar for a period of up to one year (your choice) starting at any time
convenient to you on or before October 1, 1979. We cannot offer a
salaried position, but we can offer some help with transportation and
living expenses as well as office space, secretarial help and computer
facilities. Specifically, we offer a round-trip airplane ticket from
Peking to San Francisco and $450 per month living expenses for up to one
year.
.<<We would be able to provide office space, secretarial help, and
.computer facilities but no salary or expenses, i.e. no money would change
.hands.>>

If it seems likely that you will be able to accept this offer,
write me, and we will send you a DSP-66 Form that can be used to obtain a
visa from the U.S. Embassy in Peking.

Should it turn out to be mutually convenient for you and the
Computer Science Department for you to teach a course, there would be
appropriate additional payment.
